Promoting equity, overcoming discrimination
through Forum Theatre-NVC

Duration: 5 days
I recommend starting with another course from the series
Prerequisite: 6 days of NVC or another workshop with me or 1 year of group practice with me

Aims of this course

In teams or in territories…

Promote equity: gender, age, disability (visible and invisible), culture, religion, skin colour and ethnicity, social class, etc.

Identify and combat mechanisms of discrimination: sexism, racism, anti-semitism, LGBTphobia, xenophobia, validism, ageism, class contempt, etc.

To anchor equity in the long term, and cooperate in a way that integrates differences, the work sessions lead to :

  • becoming aware (from both sides),
  • beginning to transform our behaviour,
  • finding ways to transform structures and organisations.

Content

1. Ending systemic and direct violence

  • Deal with an inequitable word or action that we receive or witness.
  • Know how to stop the situation. Gain clarity about what is at stake. Find the resources to restore equity.
  • Identify our own inequitable or discriminatory actions or words.
  • Analyze the groups that I am part of. Deconstruct the stereotypes that we may have about someone. Dismantle our inappropriate reflexes.
  • Understand our interdependence.
  • Understand the links between systemic and direct violence (verbal, physical).
  • Understand the link between the sender and receiver of inequities.
  • Make a conscious choice between defeating the other person or restoring equity.

2. Knowing how to act when a situation is intense

  • Gain clarity about the types of situations in which it is difficult for me to cooperate (type of people, number of people, types of themes, pace, energy level, etc.) and anticipate these situations.
  • Know how to stop an intense situation and step back (physically, emotionally, mentally) slowly and quickly (practising a stop, self-empathy, empathy, situational awareness).
  • Gain clarity about my availability and that of others.
  • Check my intention and anchor myself in a position of cooperation.

3. Restoring dialogue between groups

  • Find the conditions to (re)establish a dialogue.
  • Speak for and on behalf of a group.
  • Listen for and on behalf of a group.
  • Find solutions that respect the needs of each individual and the group.
  • Tools to implement this approach in a group.

Testimonials

While performing, when I see violence in others, I know that I also have it in me.

Héloisa

This brings together social change, activism and links between people: bridges between them are built.

Moussein

When you're committed to a cause, you often don’t listen or act for yourself and you don’t express yourself. This approach allows you to listen to yourself and recharge your batteries.

Hannah

When faced with external stimuli, this allowed me to regain my sense of responsibility, to come back to myself and get back to what's essential to me.

Aline

Performing makes our representations and stereotypes more visible. It's fun and clarifying.
